Listening is difficult. – By Seth Godin via his newsletter.

Listening is difficult

Hearing happens when we’re able to recognize a sound.

Listening happens when we put in the effort to understand what it means.

It not only requires focus, but it also requires a commitment to encountering the experience, intent and emotion behind the words. And that commitment can be scary. Because if we’re exposed to that emotion and those ideas, we discover things we might be avoiding.

A second stimulus check and extra $600 unemployment benefit are on life support after the surprising May jobs report.

As protests in the wake of George Floyd’s killing enter their second week, stunning images and videos have emerged over the past 24 hours from around the world, including a group of U.K. protesters throwing the statue of a slave trader into a river.

Robert Smith, one of the world’s top investors and philanthropists, gave his first public talk on the Floyd murder and protests to discuss how it has affected him as a black entrepreneur and what the business world must do to champion racial equality.

Behind the smiles and silence: Black professionals are angry, scared and depressed. “Our community is exhausted…and coming into the workplace holding pain and the weight of what they’re watching.”

AG Bill Barr defended the use of pepper spray against protesters, claiming that it is “not a chemical irritant.” Here’s why that is incorrect. MORE80% of voters think the country is out of control.

Nearly 40% of Americans surveyed by the CDC have done high-risk things with household cleaners in attempts to stay safe from the Covid-19 coronavirus. The most common is applying bleach to food. Uhm, don’t.

Today’s Must-Read
Lin-Manuel Miranda knows better than to  “throw away his shot.” While appearing with Walt Disney Chairman Bob Iger in May, the creator of Broadway’s hottest ticket was simultaneously tweeting his 3.1 million #HamFam: Rather than having to wait to see Hamilton in theaters, fans would be able to stream it on Disney+ over the Independence Day weekend.

It’s easy to see the film version of Hamilton, which features the entire original cast, as another victim of the global pandemic. But in a classic case of making lemonade out of lemons, the Disney+ deal, worth an estimated $30 million to Miranda personally, was the icing on the financial cake for the Tony Award-winning hip-hop musical about the dawn of the United States.

It not only pushed the show above $1 billion in global revenue, but it landed Miranda among the world’s highest-paid celebrities for the first time. The composer-actor-producer debuted at No. 62 on the 2020 Celebrity 100 with estimated earnings of $45.5 million before taxes and fees.

“When Disney paid $75 million for the worldwide movie rights to Hamilton, that got us thinking: Why does the story of one of the nation’s founding fathers resonate so strongly?” notes Senior Editor Dawn Chmielewski. “We found there’s something in Alexander Hamilton’s journey for everyone: Progressives celebrate the triumphant immigrant’s journey. Conservatives love the classic bootstrap-tale.”

“This is a universal theme of overcoming adversity,” says one investor. “That message is needed now more than ever.”
